About the Sixth Form
The 6th form at Wolverley is an experience very different from that which students receive at GCSE. It is an experience that our students find very rewarding in a challenging period of their lives. Students have an exclusive teaching area in Woodfield house along with a 6th form Common Room and Refectory. We believe this helps create the right atmosphere, separate to but at the same time still very much part of the whole school.
All students are placed in tutor groups where we arrange a series of academic tutor meetings. The aim of these is to allow the student and the tutor to build up a meaningful relationship that focuses on enabling the students to gain the best possible grades in their subjects.
The range of subjects is impressive, and as we are now part of The ContinU Partnership with other local 6th forms, the choice is even bigger.
Subjects taught at AS and A2 level include:
Accounting, Art, Biology, Business Studies, Chemistry, Dance, English Lang, English Lit Food, French, Further Maths, Geography, German, History, ICT, Law, Maths, Media, Music Tech, Philosophy, Physical Ed, Physics, Product Design, Psychology, Sociology, Textiles, Theatre Studies. Each year we are looking to extend the range possible.
We also offer 1 year BTEC courses in:
Care, Land and Environment, Sport, Construction, Hospitality and Catering, Retail and Logistics, Public Services.
All students have private study lessons that are supervised as the need for independent learning is hugely important for success in the 6th form. We also arrange Key Skills and Enrichment lessons for years 12 and 13 where students have the opportunity to develop more skills in a wider variety of areas. This is designed to help prepare them yet further for life after Wolverley.
Our success rate in several subjects is impressive with subjects such as Drama, Geography, Media Studies and Music Technology achieving 100% pass rates.
In general, class sizes are kept small so that students receive a higher level of attention and tutoring.
The 6th form Committee is voted each year and they are given responsibility for the running of the common room, refectory, social events and academic issues. They organise a very successful Snow Ball and Year 13 Prom. There are other social events organized at the end of the terms as well, frequently, though not always held in our beautiful grounds.
Currently the committee is planning considerable changes to the 6th form area as a result of a large sum of funding being made available.
All 6th form students are part of the house system and are encouraged to be part of the enrichment programme. We also encourage them to take a lead role in coaching students in enrichment activities. Currently 6th form students run a dance and a drama club both of which go towards a national award.
As a Specialist Music College we have a number involved in music activities both in and out of school, and in and out of the UK!
For sport the Sports Leader Award is an ideal opportunity to develop coaching and leadership skills and there are 6th form teams in football and cricket for example. With after school Art, Food Technology and much more there really is something for everyone.
