Wolverley CS Secondary School

History

Photos of a Tank, Trenches and Graves from the Two World WarsHistory has become very popular and this is reflected in the large number of students that choose to carry on studying History at GCSE and A-Level at Wolverley.  Topics covered in examined courses mainly focus on the 20th Century, right up to the end of the Cold War in the 1990's.  At Key Stage 3, students cover the History of Britain from medieval times through to the industrial age.  At the end of Year 9 students consider contemporary threats to our world, including terrorism.

Within History we offer a number of visits to museums and historical sights, taking the students out of the classroom and bringing the history alive.
Sixth Form Historians attend A-Level conferences and have been on trips to Berlin to help them with their study of the Cold War and Nazi Germany.

In Year 10, an annual trip to the First World War battlefields and cemeteries in Ypres, Belgium, provides a poignant resource for students writing coursework.

Year 9 students will be visiting the Imperial War Museum North for their study of 20th Century conflict and a trip to the Commonwealth Museum in Year 8 for the topic of slavery.

History is covered in the Opening Minds curriculum in year 7, then in years 8 and 9 students receive 3 lessons a week. The subject is then offered all the way up to A level with consistently good results and a good percentage of people opting to go onto read it at University.
