Geography
Geography is changing. It is a central issue to so many of the topical stories that are in the news today and we do our best to reflect this in what we cover. Topics that are covered now are the resources in the environment, medical geography, geography of crime and of sport, the world of work, pressures on coasts, responses to flooding, the enhanced greenhouse effect and migration. Gone are the days of Ox Bow Lakes and meanders!
We adopt a skills based approach to learning with a clear focus on how the students are learning and developing skills that can be transferred across different subject areas. We also strive to ensure that all students know the level they are working at and what they need to do to improve their work to the next level.
In the department we offer a wide variety of opportunities for students to attend fieldtrips. We see this as an important way to allow students to see Geography in action and relevant to their surroundings. Opportunities include residential trips to London and the sites of the 2012 Olympics, Swanage and the South Coast of Dorset, Minehead in Somerset, and Llanrug in North Wales. There are also day trips to Birmingham planned.
Geography is covered in the Opening Minds curriculum in year 7, then in years 8 and 9 students receive 3 lessons a week. The subject is then offered all the way up to A level with consistently good results and a good percentage of people opting to go onto read it at University.
