Wolverley CS Secondary School

Psychology

Girl Studying PsychologyPsychology is a very popular subject at A Level; students are interested in psychology because it relates well to their lives and the world around them.

At Wolverley students follow the Edexcel course in the Sixth Form. It is a very flexible course and there is some choice of what area can be studied in the second year.

In the first year (AS) the basic approaches are learned and the students develop an understanding of memory and the reliability of eyewitness testimony. They learn about the dangers of blind obedience and prejudice and explanations for them. They also look at child development, gender and how we learn. Freud and mental disorders are studied and the biological approach with regard to sleep and body rhythms also. Students are now expected to develop an understanding of how to research the topics studied and have a go at doing so.

In the second year (A2) the students develop and explore psychology in more depth looking at how it is applied. Clinical psychology (mental disorders) and criminal psychology including profiling are studied and there are options of health, environmental or child psychology also.

The students at Wolverley have the opportunity to attend psychology conferences and most recently a forensic psychology conference in offender profiling by the world renowned Professor David Canter.

Most A2 students at Wolverley choose psychology as their subject to study at university.
