Science
Science is a subject that tends to provoke strong emotions in people, a bit like Marmite. It is a core subject and something that students have to study up to the end of KS4. Because of this, and the time involved, it is an area all students need to be ready to work in.
KS3
KS3 science prepares students for their SATs in May of Year 9. It covers 4 basic areas, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and How Science Works.
Students work in groups that are set for ability. The more able students are working towards the Level 5-7 paper whilst other students tackle the 3-6 paper. The course consists of practical and theoretical activities.
KS4
At KS4 Science becomes more complicated with students having 4 possible options. They can study core science, this takes 5 hours per fortnight and gets them a single GCSE. The course looks at issues such as global warming and cloning. Most students opt to do the additional or applied science courses as well . These are an extra 5 hours a fortnight and get the students a second GCSE. The additional course focuses on a more traditional approach to science and is examined through exams and coursework. The applied course is more focus on science in the workplace and places more of an emphasis on coursework. Some of the best students opt to do triple science. This leads to 3 separate GCSEs and takes an extra 10 hours per fortnight. All the courses are examined through modular papers over the course of the two years.
A level
A level sciences are offered in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Students have 8 hours per fortnight. Many students choose to go on to study the subject further at university.
